Italy has no shortage of ghost stories. Behind the grand faรงades of its castles and palaces are tales of tragic love affairs, mysterious disappearances, violent deaths and curses that supposedly haunt their owners to this day. Some stories date back centuries, others are harder to trace, but all have become part of the placeโ€™s lore. Here are seven of Italyโ€™s most haunted placesโ€”and the stories behind them.

Caโ€™ Dario

Venice, Veneto

Overlooking Veniceโ€™s Grand Canal, the elegant 15th-century Caโ€™ Dario has earned a reputation as the cityโ€™s โ€œcursed palace.โ€ Legend links a series of financial disasters, violent deaths and other misfortunes among its owners to the building itself, leading to tales that the palazzo brings bad luck to anyone who possesses it. Whether curse or coincidence, its beautiful Renaissance faรงade conceals one of Veniceโ€™s most enduring dark legends.

Castello dei Conti Guidi

Poppi, Tuscany

Perched above the Casentino Valley, the medieval Castello dei Conti Guidi is associated with the ghost of Matelda, a young woman whose tragic story has become part of local folklore. According to legend, she was punished for her romantic relationships and is said to haunt the castle, her restless spirit a reminder of the harsh rules and passions of medieval life.

Castello di Brolio

Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany

Surrounded by vineyards in the heart of Chianti, Castello di Brolio has a ghost story befitting its dramatic history. The castle is said to be haunted by theย โ€œIron Baron,โ€ Bettino Ricasoli, the 19th-century statesman and winemaking pioneer whose family has owned the estate since 1141. According to local legend, his spirit still wanders the grounds, keeping watch over the property he helped shape.ย (This castle is often featured on my Tuscany Wine + Culture Tour.)

Castello di Montebello

Poggio Torriana, Emilia-Romagna

This hilltop fortress near Rimini is famous for the legend of Azzurrina, a young girl whose real name was Guendalina and who reportedly disappeared inside the castle in 1375. Born with very pale hair, she was nicknamed Azzurrina because her hair took on bluish reflections after it was dyed; legend says she vanished while chasing a ball into an underground passage. Some believe her cries or laughter can still be heard in the castle, particularly around the summer solstice.

Poveglia Island

Venetian Lagoon, Veneto

Few places in Italy have a more chilling reputation than Poveglia, an abandoned island in the Venetian Lagoon. It served as a quarantine station during epidemics and later housed a medical institution, and stories of plague victims, restless souls and unexplained phenomena helped earn it the nickname โ€œthe island of ghosts.โ€ Its reputation as one of the worldโ€™s most haunted places has been amplified by modern paranormal media, although many of its most sensational tales remain unsubstantiated.ย

Castello di Torre Alfina

Torre Alfina, Lazio

Near Acquapendente in northern Lazio, the imposing Castello di Torre Alfina is associated with mysterious events said to have taken place in its medieval underground chambers. Local stories describe whispers, ghostly voices and the lingering presence of spirits connected to the Monaldeschi family, who ruled the castle in the 14th century. More recent reports also describe a mysterious female apparition seen descending a staircase inside the castle.

Castel Santโ€™Angelo

Rome, Lazio

Originally built as Emperor Hadrianโ€™s mausoleum, Castel Santโ€™Angelo has served as a fortress, papal refuge and prison, giving it a history rich in intrigue and tragedy. Its ghostly associations are linked to Beatrice Cenci, a young Roman noblewoman executed in 1599, whose spirit is said to appear around the nearby Ponte Santโ€™Angelo, sometimes carrying her severed head. Her story has become one of Romeโ€™s most enduring ghost legends, blending a real historical tragedy with centuries of supernatural folklore.

You may not encounter a ghost on your visit, but you might find yourself looking over your shoulder. After all, in a country with as much history as Italy, who knows whatโ€”or whoโ€”might still be lingering.
