When it comes to wine, no other country in the world can compete with the diverse and exciting wines Italy has to offer. With that in mind, La Dolce Vigna has put together a Checklist of 21 Lesser Known Italian Wines to Try in 2021 with a brief introduction to each wine below.

RED WINE

1) Verduno Pelaverga DOC

Pelaverga, a native Piemontese grape variety, is behind this lightred wine that offers red fruit and sweet spice flavors, alongsidea bright acidity.

2) Lacrima di Morro D'Alba DOC

The eponymous aromatic red grape hailing from Marche makesthese truly unique wines brimming with dark berries, rose andbaking spices.

3) Grignolino del Monferrato DOC

This versatile red wine from Piedmont is characteristically palein color, fresh, with red berries, white pepper, and light floraltouches.

4) Cesanese del Piglio DOCG

Red cherry on the nose gives way to spices and floral flavors onthe palate with this dry red wine from Lazio.

5) Monica di Sardegna DOC

This smooth, medium-bodied wine from Sardinia has aflavorprofile of red berries and Mediterranean herbs.

6) Faro DOC

Made from a blend of native Sicilian grapes, Faro expresses acomplex combination of dark berries, earth, and spice,accompanied by elegant acidity and tannins.

7) Valtellina Superiore DOCG

From an Alpine area in Lombardy comes this structured andnuanced Nebbiolo-based wine; Red cherry, earth, mineral,licorice, rose and violet.

8) Lacryma Christi Rosso Vesuvio DOC

Made from Piedirosso grapes grown on the slopes of Mt.Vesuvio in Campania, this wine is an explosion of red berries,spice and bright acidity.

9) Cirò Rosso DOC

The Calabrian grape Gaglioppo gives this wine its characteristiclight color but big flavor; Expect plum, dark berries, and bakingspices.

10) Susumaniello Puglia IGT

The indigenous Pugliese grape of the same name makes thismedium to full-bodied wine with black cherry, plum and cloveflavors accompanied by light tannins.

11) Rosso Conero DOC

This big, well-structured Montepulciano-based wine fromMarche expresses blackberry, pepper and licorice.

12) Teroldego Rotaliano DOC

Rotaliano is the grand cru for Teroldego grapes in Trentino,where they make dark, softly tannic wines bursting withblackberry, rhubarb, pine, and mountain herbs.

13) Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG

The Aglianico grapes grown on an extinct volcano in Basilicatagive power to this complex, full-bodied and firmly structuredwine; Blueberries, chocolate and savory notes abound.

ROSÉ WINE

14) Bardolino Chiaretto DOC

Made from the same grapes that go into Valpolicella, thissmooth and refreshing rosé from the Veneto offers gentleflavors of strawberries and white flowers.

WHITE WINE

15) Blanc de Morgex et Salle DOC

Valle d'Aosta is home to this high-acid, herbal-driven white winemade from the Prié Blanc grape.

16) Colli Orientali Friulano DOC

Crisp and lively with notes of green apple, almond and delicatewhite flowers, this wine is one of the many in Friuli made fromthe region's most emblematic grape variety, Friulano.

17) Lugana DOC

Turbiana grapes planted at the base of Lake Garda create thisdry wine with complex flavors of stone fruit, citrus and elegantmineral flourishes.

18) Ischia Bianco DOC

A blend of indigenous grape varieties from the island of Ischiaiin Campania, this wine emphasizes lemon, apricot, Mediterranean herbs, and sea salt.

19) Colli di Luni Vermentino DOC

Vermentino grapes grown along the Ligurian coast renderthese lively wines full of apricot, grapefruit and mineralfreshness.

20) Gambellara Bianco DOC

Gambellara, Soave's less famous neighbor, also makes flavorful, mineral-driven white wines from the native Garganega grape.known for its golden apple, apricot, almond, and acacia flavors.
